class1

Mark Kinan is now teaching icon classes!

The top questions he gets about classes are:

"Do I have to be an artist to take this class?"
No! You do not have to be artistic to take this class. Icon painting is unlike any other form of painting, so in some respects, the less you know, the more you learn. I have taught a wide range of adults, from art teachers to those who have never picked up a brush. One common thread in all my students is an urgent desire to learn iconography, a desire that they often say comes from the Holy Spirit, a desire that they didn't even know they had. Beginners and advanced painters are welcome!

"Do I have to be Orthodox to take this class?"
Iconography is a purely Orthodox art, however it is not necessary for you to be Orthodox to learn to paint icons, as the love of God is not limited to any religion. Before all it is a teaching tool, a tool of worship for those who wish to be nearer to Christ, and is often a large part of what draws people to the Orthodox Church.

"What will I learn during this class?"
The first session of class is generally reserved for getting to know each other and for an introduction to the history and art of iconography.

The remaining sessions are dedicated to the technique of Byzantine icon painting. We use acrylic paint and 23 karat gold leaf, on a prepared board made of birch plywood.

"What must I bring with me?"
All your supplies will be provided for your use. It is necessary for you to bring only a humble, prayerful spirit and a smile!

"How long does class last?"
Classes run for 10 weeks, for 4 hours per week, generally on Saturday afternoons.

"How much does it cost?"
$450.00. Payment arrangements can be made.
