![]() Christ the Teacher The image is grave and solemn, full of love and care, inviting us to look into His divine eyes. In His eyes, we are captured by an attentive look which penetrates our hearts, all the while being reminded of the death he died for our salvation. In Christ's halo a cross, called a nimbus, is formed containing the Greek abbreviations for "I am That I am". And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and He said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. (Exodus 3:14) On the sides of Christ's halo appears the Greek abbreviation ICXC, the name of Jesus Christ. Christ's right hand is giving the blessing. As you see, His fingers form the letters ICXC. The very same blessing is given by our Orthodox priests each week at Liturgy. In His left hand is held the Gospel book which, when open, will feature a verse from scripture. Christ the Teacher is appropriately found on the right side of the Holy Doors of the Iconostasis, or icon screen, at the front of the Church. O heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who art in all places and fillest all things; Treasury of good things and Giver of life: Come and dwell in us and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord. -Opening prayer of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom ![]() Close Window |
